This is a Late Classic Mayan cylinder vessel from Yucatan. What's in it? Well, normally, there would have been wine in it, but currently? It contains nothing. But it could have bubbled up with concentrated hydrochloric acid if someone should have touched it without the curse being removed first. It wouldn't have done anything to the stone itself, however... bye-bye, hands! It belonged to a Mayan ajaw (or hereditary ruler), who, I suppose was very protective of wine collection because we've found similar vessels like these in a tomb, all heavily cursed... and that's it. Nothing else in abundance.

Four more days and then I'm gone. What a fucking relief. Because despite having plenty to do, I've realized I do less of it when I'm not actively working in the field. I could probably write a whole goddamn book while out in another country, rather than in the quietness of my own home.
Too much quiet is a bit unnerving.
Anyway. I'd like you to meet my new friend! Unfortunately, he doesn't belong to me but a coworker, but if he had a twin, I would have taken him home with me. And his name is Benjamin and he likes lying down on laps, apparently. Particularly, my lap.

I have two weeks.
Two weeks to get some substantial part of my writing done or to putz around the flat and pretend I'm getting work done, to either party or throw parties, or go hide in a cave somewhere (it's been a while since I've done that).
And then. AND THEN. After those two weeks.
I'm heading for MEXICO!! Birth place of many Pre-Columbian civilizations, places and origins of people that I've so far only read in books and yet to see! Olmecs, Aztecs, City of Teotihuacán, JAGUARS!
Okay, so that last one has less to do with the history, but if I see one, it'll be absolutely fan-fucking-tastic.
